jQuery Starter Kit for SharePoint
Overview

Over the past year, use of jQuery to enhance the SharePoint interface has exploded. Solutions using jQuery can help create dynamic content display, add interface enhancements and add functionality to the SharePoint interface without access to the server. This set of workshops will lay the foundation for SharePoint Site Managers and Power Users to build their own, context based solutions in SharePoint without need for access to the SharePoint server. All solutions are browser based and non-distructive to SharePoint Masterpages.

  • March 8, 2010 - Get Started w/ jQuery in SharePoint
  • March 22, 2010 - Build a SharePoint Scripting Resource Center
  • April 16, 2010 - Elegant Interface Solutions: jQuery Slider and Display MouseOver Tooltips

Each workshop session is fully hands-on, including your own SharePoint sandbox for implementing the solutions, all of the resources and materials needed to implement the solutions, and access to an on-demand recording of the entire session when you need to review.

Purchasing the entire series of three workshops saves you $58.00 and guarantees you a seat in each of the sessions. All workshops are delivered live, online through your computer where you will be able to see the presenters desktop as well as hear the session over your computer speakers or headphones.

Detailed descriptions of each of the workshops are shown below. We look forward to seeing you at the next set of EUSP Live Online Workshops.

Get Started w/ jQuery in SharePoint
March 8, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

Getting started with jQuery is relatively easy. It's deciding what to do with it and what examples to start with that are the real problems. In this introduction to jQuery session, we'll get you the foundation you need to start experimenting with existing jQuery solutions and understand why it has become so poplular so fast to many SharePoint site managers.

Workshop Overview

The session begins with a series of examples to show where jQuery shines:

  • Display a list in another site
  • An image rotator
  • Rollover tooltip for dynamic display of metadata

We'll then look at why jQuery is so popular, reviewing the evolution of Web design and how the Web has evolved in the past 5 years. This leads to a discussion on why client side scripts, with jQuery as flagship, have turned into powerful solutions.

In the hands-on section of the workshop, we'll identify the main components of a SharePoint page, and learn how to access and tweak them using jQuery. We'll also look at when jQuery is not the best choice

You'll find on the Web many articles that follow the buzz and advertise the "power of jQuery". Based on examples, we'll learn to see through so-called solutions and make the right choices.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at Site Administrators and Power Users looking for techniques to add additional functionality to their SharePoint pages without having access to the SharePoint server. All solutions can be implemented with Site Manager level permissions in the SharePoint 2003 and 2007 environments.

This is the first workshop in a three part series, jQuery Starter Kit for SharePoint. You do not have to take the other workshops in order to take this one... they are all stand-alone solutions.

Build a SharePoint Scripting Resource Center
March 22, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

As I started working with Christophe Humbert and Paul Grenier on various jQuery workshops last year, it became apparent that we needed some kind of central repository for not just the solutions we were creating, but the core jQuery libraries used by those solutions. This workshop is a direct outgrowth of that need.

Workshop Overview

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of cut and paste jQuery solutions on the internet. As manager of your site or site collection, how are you managing access to not just the scripts, but the jQuery core files themselves?

In this hands-on workshop, we will build a SharePoint Scripting Resource Center as a central respository for all of your jQuery scripting solutions. We will talk about security and access to those resources as well as set you up with core libraries such as the jQuery core and Marc Anderson's jQuery for SharePoint Web Services library. We will include solutions you can implement immediately across your site collection to enhance your existing SharePoint sites.

The SharePoint Scripting Resource Center is built from a SharePoint wiki site, making it self documenting and maintainable by the people creating, as well as using, your jQuery solutions.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at site administrators and power users who are implementing jQuery solutions in their sites and site collections.

This is the second workshop in a three part series, jQuery Starter Kit for SharePoint. You do not have to take the other workshops in order to take this one... they are all stand-alone solutions.

Elegant Interface Solutions w/ jQuery
April 16, 2010 - 1:00pm EST

jQuery solutions are easy to find on the web. The real difficulty is how do you expose SharePoint data to the solutions. In this workshop, we'll examine ways to expose site data to three very useful interface solutions.

Workshop Overview

The session begins with a look at some elegant jQuery solutions:

  • Image slider, based on the jQuery Tools plugin
  • News ticker (derived from the slider)
  • Tooltip based on the jQuery Beauty Tips plugin

We'll apply the methods learnt in the two previous workshops to identify the SharePoint content for display, and reformat it. The techniques used include grabbing list SharePoint list data using jQuery, rendering it via a free jQuery plugin,  and then deploying the solution within your SharePoint site.

Who is this for?

This workshop is aimed at site administrators and power users who need to manage and display graphical information in their SharePoint site.

This is the third workshop in a three part series on using jQuery Starter Kit for SharePoint. It is recommended that you have some experience with jQuery before attempting the solutions in this workshop. This workshop expands upon the ideas presented in the two previous workshops of this series.
